Mazda is recalling 260,915 Mazda3 cars from the 2004 through 2007 model years. It is to fix a problem with a logo on the steering wheel’s airbag module. The plastic logo may, in fact, shatter, thus sending fragments throughout the vehicle and have the potential to cause injury. The NHTSA said the Mazdas built after June 2016 have received improved steering wheel logos. This was in its report. Therefore, they are not subject to the problem.

A statement was issuing by Mazda saying the problem is “due to an improper material specification” that can cause the plastic steering-wheel logo to “become brittle over time.” However, the automaker is changing to a higher-quality logo in mid-2006. Moreover, it would be not subject to the program.

Occupant Sustained Facial Injuries

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a defect report Mazda did receive the first report of an occupant that sustained facial injuries because of this defect in September 2015. All outside the U.S., between then and September 2019, there have been eight incidents. Two lawsuits have been filing inside the U.S. that have claiming injuries because of the program.

Airbag Module Cover Replacement

The airbag module cover is going to be replacing by Mazda on those affecting vehicles but will not replace the airbag or inflator, NHTSA has said. Moreover, customers will be notified about the recall starting at the end of August. Meanwhile, owners can check Mazda’s own recall site.
